For decades women have banded together to challenge injustices, overcome barriers and pursue equality.

International Women’s Day provided an opportunity to commemorate these efforts, celebrate progress and call for commitment to women’s rights, peace and equality.

The ‘Ironic Cake Sale’ was run by Feminist Society members Antonia Nelson, Matthew Koch and Fleur Eden. With a contribution of 50p per cake, and additional donations welcomed, the Feminist Society raised £180 for The Oxfam’s Mother’s Appeal.

The leader of the Feminist Society Antonia Nelson explained more about the charity the Feminist Society is raising money for: “The Oxfam’s Mother’s Appeal helps mothers in developing countries to set up and run profitable businesses to support them and their children. It helps creates a better infrastructure in developing countries, as well as helping women stand on their own feet.”

Matthew Koch added: “It’s a great way to help the mothers in developing countries build a better future for themselves and their loved ones.”

The cake sale was well received at the college, with students and teachers queuing up to both enjoy homemade cake and support a worthy cause.

Fleur Eden said: “Women’s rights and equality is an issue even today, despite help from Governments globally. We (The Feminist Society) are hoping to broaden people’s ideas about feminism– as well tackling global women’s issues.”

Collyer’s Principal, Dr Jackie Johnston said: “Thanks must go to the students involved, who have worked extremely hard to create such a wonderful event. I am proud that the Collyer’s community have really embraced International Women’s Day.”
