Infant gardeners join meeting

On Wednesday 26th March, some members of the Southwater Horticultural Society attended a Special General Meeting at the Academy at which the Infant Gardening Club was formally instituted.

The club is to be linked with the SHS, sharing the grown up’s President but having their own proper constitution and committee.

As President of the SHS and now the IGC too, Mike Tuckwell welcomed everybody to the inaugural meeting and said that the Southwater Horticultural Society is delighted that we are joining together so that we can learn from one another.

He also said that he knows the children are good gardeners as he was privileged to judge their Summer Show and to see their gardens last summer.

Headmistress Mrs Winn, who is also the IGC secretary, explained what the Infant Gardening Club linked to the Southwater Horticultural Society would be.

She explained the responsibilities which form their constitution and asked for all members to vote as to whether they were in agreement with these responsibilities. There was a unanimous vote in favour!

The Friends of Southwater Infant Academy have bought some new spades, forks, hoes, rakes and brooms, together with a poly tunnel and some cloches to get the club started growing some seeds and also potatoes which have been chitted ready to plant.

The new committee agreed to meet the very next day to decide what needed to be done next!

Everyone is very much looking forward to working together and sharing their gardening know-how.

Briony Glave, Chairperson of the Infant Gardening Club, said “It’s really good to meet some experts to help us do better gardening. We want to learn how to grow some really big vegetables to eat and lots of flowers for insects”.
