On Monday October 20 residents of the West Sussex village gathered at the Parish Room, next to St Margaret’s Church, for the interactive session which included an explanation of how dementia can affect people.

The residents who attended the session have joined the 27 people who have already become Dementia Friends in the village. Dementia Friends is about giving more people an understanding of dementia and the small things that could make a difference to people living in their community.

Sue Rennie, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for West Sussex North, said:”We feel privileged that the High Sheriff was able to come along to the session. We hope that he and everyone else at the session enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot from it.”

The session was run by Shirley Coggins, an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Champion. She said: “The Friends session went really well and the High Sheriff and his wife were both present. The High Sheriff asked a number of questions throughout the session and both he and his wife have signed up to be Dementia Friends. We had a huge amount of fun doing the session.”

High Sheriff of West Sussex, Jonathan Lucas, said: “I was pleased to attend the session. I found it both fun and instructive. As life expectancy rises, so inevitably will dementia, and we all need to have a better understanding of this condition. Please join me in becoming a Dementia Friend.”
