While for most students the holidays offer an opportunity to relax after a busy term, two students from Christ’s Hospital instead took on the tough challenge of completing leadership courses with the British Army.

det Colour Sergeants Flo Carr Smith and Tal McMaster-Christie, who are both members of the School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF), undertook the prestigious Cadet Leadership Course at the National Cadet Training Centre at Frimley Park.

The cadets had their confidence, teamwork, physical fitness and ability to command tested in a series of military and physical challenges over the course of a week. The course culminated in a 3-day military exercise testing the cadets’ ability to lead under pressure as they took on a number of realistic tactical scenarios.

Both cadets received excellent reports on their performance, while Flo also returned with two medals awarded for her excellent performance in the Wish Stream physical training competition and for being part of the best team during the week as a whole.

Lieutenant Peter Andersen, Head of the Army Section at Christ’s Hospital, commented: “Flo and Tal have picked up a lot of knowledge and new skills on their course, which they are already employing to good effect as they take responsibility for training younger students. We are very proud of both of them.”

One-hundred and sixty students are currently members of the CCF at Christ’s Hospital, divided between the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force sections. It offers a challenging and fun programme of military and adventure training to those in Year 9 and above.
