More than 50 people were in the audience comparing specialist beers with cheeses from across the South and South West.

From Fursty Ferret and Stinger to Golden Champion and Poacher’s Choice, the Hall and Woodhouse beers sampled were teamed with various strengths of cheddars, blues and bries – all made in England.

Mark, who is the great- great-great-great grandson of the founder of the Dorset brewery, said: “We have the best beers and cheeses in the world and they are more than a match for wines when it comes to putting them together.”

His family has been producing ale since 1777 and he told the audience all the barley used in their brewing was British and that 90 per cent of hops were grown in the UK.

The White Hart is just one of the Hall and Woodhouse pubs in the Horsham district.

White Hart landlord Gyles Culver, who is celebrating 15 years in Henfield with wife Mo, said: “It was a thoroughly entertaining evening and we were delighted to host Mark’s very informative talk.

“I think the sampling was much appreciated by the packed audience in our new Courtyard Room.”
