Children and staff were excited to welcome parents and members of the community into the school to share in the harvest musical opening from pupils in Years 1-5, conducted by Mr Bradshaw, and to the Fair afterwards.

Pupils’ felting work and graphic design from the recent whole school art day as well as the children’s handmade bunting were on display, demonstrating some of what the children have done recently in exploring new skills and talents.

Plentiful home entries of drawings, paintings, photography and poetry added colour and further showed off their creativity in the Autumnal Art competitive classes including imaginative animals, flowers and fierce dragons in the Egg Box competition.

Parents and pupils both competed in the inaugural ‘Great West Chiltington School Bake Off’, in which entries ranged from traditional sponges through to ‘cheery scones’ and impeccably decorated cakes.

Impressed community judges enjoyed all the entries and awarded rosettes to entries in each category from members of our Green Class reception children aged 4-5 years, through to the 10 year olds and to the Parents’ entries. All cakes were then sold with proceeds going towards the school Friends of School Association (FOSA) fund.

“Everybody made something and enjoyed making something, “ said Tom, age 7 in Orange Class, who had made jars of pesto in school, weighing and measuring and calculating costs vs profit before the sale.

Many of the events and stalls were run by the children themselves. Another class made and sold their own chutney, while others devised and ran games. “It was fun getting my face wet during the apple bobbing,” Brandon added outside.

One group of young entrepreneurs working with a budget allocated by parents and teachers ran a pop up café and they will be presenting parent shareholders with their learnings and profit performance.

The event closed with the Grand Raffle draw which included prizes donated by local businesses Courtney Green Estate agents, Nutbourne vineyards, Dyke Farm shop, Scott Free Range Ham, Classic Cuvee from Nyetimber Vineyards, vouchers from the Rising Sun in Nutbourne and the Petworth Literary Festival. Thanks also to Sainsbury’s Pulborough for donating the bread served with soup at the Pop Up Cafe.

For these and all parents’ donations FOSA is very grateful. The whole afternoon raised around £1700 for school funds.

A special thanks to Sarah Rose and the FOSA committee and parent/carer volunteers for organising the event.

Thank you to head-teacher Mr. Rose and all of the staff at West Chiltington School, and many thanks to pupils, parents and the community who made sure the October weather did not dampen the spirit of the event, even if we had to contend with some rain. It certainly didn’t affect the apple bobbing.
