Offers and discounts scheme for Burgess Hill pensioners

A ‘Silver Savers’ promotion is about to be launched at Market Place Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill that will entitle senior citizens to offers and discounts from retailers every Tuesday.

To promote the initiative, centre manager Chris Goldfinch has named former teacher Myrtle Williams as the shopping centre’s ‘Older People’s Ambassador’.

Myrtle, 83, will be guest of honour and cake baking judge at the launch of the ‘Silver Savers’ promotion this Friday (September 27) from 9am to 12.

Barbershop quartet ‘Stepping Out’ will be entertaining shoppers and there will be a bake-off to find the town’s top cake maker and to mark the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research.

Mr Goldfinch, said: “Myrtle is a shining example of a more mature person and does not let age get in her way. She has a fantastically active life and we have heard about how she shares her positive attitude with other older people.

“This is why she is the perfect candidate for our role of Silver Savers Ambassador to help launch our new discount day for senior citizens. They will be treated to a range of fantastic offers and discounts every Tuesday and I hope Myrtle will be one of the first to take advantage.”

Myrtle said: “Anything that helps save a few pence is a good thing.”

The active octogenarian, who has rung the bells at Chichester and Winchester Cathedrals, loves to play bowls or take on her friends at cards during her visits to Cherry Tree Activity Centre, in Fairfield Road, Burgess Hill, which is run by charity Age UK.

Myrtle is one of four member representatives who greet newcomers at the centre to make sure they feel welcome.

Centre co-ordinator Maria Newman said: “Myrtle is a lovely person and always cheerful. She’s invaluable to the centre, and takes her turn in looking after new arrivals, making sure they are settled in.”
