New manager for Shoreham Coastwatch

Long-serving member David Dyke replaces Barrie Turner, who has retiring after seven years in the voluntary role at Shoreham NCI Lookout Station.

Mr Dyke has many years’ experience working with the Royal Navy Fleet Auxiliary and enjoyed a long career as a senior civil servant.

He said: “It is a privilege to take over the management of Shoreham NCI from Barrie, whose hard work and dedication has resulted in the Shoreham lookout being cited as one of the best run of the 50 or more NCI stations in the UK.”

The National Coastwatch Institution lookout is located on Shoreham Beach, at the entrance to the harbour.

It was set up seven years ago, when the NCI took over a bricked-up old searchlight building next to Shoreham Fort, and Mr Turner has been involved since the start.

He is now moving to Wales with his wife to enjoy his hobbies of sailing and motorcyclng.

Geoff Aspel, public relations officer, said: “The 56 men and women NCI watchkeepers at Shoreham wanted to show their appreciation of Barrie’s efforts and at the recent annual general meeting, presented him with a hand-made bench for him and his wife to enjoy the sea views from their new Welsh home.”
