New location added to Emsworth open gardens

EMSWORTH Gardens in the National Garden Scheme feature a new location for the first time in 50 years.

Talara Cottage, at 42 Horndean Road, is owned by John and Angela Baldry and Mrs Baldry has been actively involved in the village for years, running a playgroup, choir, amateur dramatics and the horticultural society.

The Edwardian villa is nestled behind the main road and the garden surrounds it on all sides. This has slowly matured over the 50 years the couple have owned it, with John managing the rear garden and Angela the front.

John’s forte is growing trees and shrubs from seed, while Angela enjoys growing shrubs from cuttings. Many of the plants in the garden have been picked up during garden visits, which Angela organises for the horticultural society, and from friends and relatives.

Interspersed around the garden are folk art furniture and ornaments, carved by John and painted by Angela.

The second garden in the Emsworth Gardens group is 23 New Brighton Road, owned by Lucy Watson and Mike Rogers.

With its eclectic mix of plants and ornaments, this is a narrow 250ft-long garden which ranges from full sun to full shade.

Informal planting maximises the space and features include a large number of containers, ponds, a greenhouse, summerhouse, shady reading area and mixed borders.

Both gardens are close to the centre of Emsworth. They will be open on Sunday, June 21, from 1pm to 5pm. Admission £5 for both. Plant sales at both, tea and cakes at Talara Cottage. Wheelchair access is difficult, pets and children welcome.
