Wendy Case, 49, will do the tandem skydive challenge later this month just days after her birthday.

She said: “Unfortunately this year I have had people I know come down with cancer.

“Quite a few of my friends have been lost to it, some have been diagnosed. A couple of people have had the all clear, but it’s been the worst year for it.”

Some of those people received good care from Macmillan and her friend, whose mum died of cancer, has continued to get support from the charity after her mum’s death.

Wendy, of Cook Road, added: “After the person has passed away they help the family. It’s an ongoing thing. The people afterwards are left to deal with it.”

She got the idea of a sky dive from her nephew.

She said: “My nephew used to be in the army. He showed me a thing online of him doing a sky dive. When I first said I was going to do it people at work thought I was making it up. My son think’s it’s great, but thinks I’m mad, like most people do. I’m just looking forward to it.”

Wendy works behind the bar at the Hall and Woodhouse pub, the Hornbrook Inn in Brighton Road. Macmillan Cancer Support is Hall and Woodhouse’s chosen charity and she has been appointed the pub’s charity guru as a result of her own fundraising.

She has raised £700 through the pub, but is trying to reach her £1,000 target through online sponsorship.

The Hornbrook Inn is holding a Macmillan coffee and cake day on Friday September 26 and Wendy will do her sky dive the next day.
