New River Retail’s application was recommended for refusal by Worthing Borough Council planners and was due for consideration by councillors on Wednesday (June 1).

But the centre owners have decided to ‘seek further dialogue’ with the council in light of objections, which included a petition of more than 1,500 signatures against the felling of three sycamore trees.

A New River Retail spokesman said: “We are seeking further dialogue with the council on this important piece of town centre investment which we believe will significantly enhance the Montague Centre and underpin the vitality of Worthing.

“We have a number of exciting restaurants wishing to come to Worthing but this hinges on our proposals being delivered.”

Big names linked to the proposal include Nando’s, Wagamama and Yo! Sushi, while Patisserie Valerie was last week confirmed as one of the planned tenants.
