Midhurst foodbank joins forces with Tesco

Tesco's initiative to raise awareness about the Trussell Trust and their food bank in Midhurst

Run by the Trussell Trust charity, the Midhurst foodbank has been in operation for more than a year, helping people experiencing crisis with a three-day supply of emergency food.

While Midhurst’s Tesco Express has been supporting the foodbank, it is now going ‘all out’ with food collections.

Food donations from members of the public can be left in the neighbourhood collection box at Tesco in North Street.

And Tesco has pledged to add a huge 30 per cent financial donation to support the charity’s work.

Anyone who visits the Midhurst store this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (December 3-5), can find out what food is most needed and how to get help from the foodbank in a crisis.

The Midhurst foodbank, situated in St Ann’s Hall, St Ann’s Hill, opened in September 2014 and is a satellite of the Chichester District Foodbank.

‘Clients’ are assessed by participating agencies which provide them with a voucher for three days food.

Agencies include Midhurst and Easebourne Primary Schools, Midhurst Rother College, Midhurst Children  and Family Centre, Hyde Housing and local churches.

The centre is open on Friday afternoons from 3pm-5pm, and has helped almost 150 people around the town and the surrounding villages since it opened.

Chrissie Abbott from the foodbank said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of the local community.

“People have given very generously in food, money and time.

“But, limited public transport makes access very difficult for some people who need help.

“The foodbank centre provides food to people in crisis and it is important that this is supplied promptly.

“We have this week introduced a seven-day mobile service.

“We can provide food and toiletries immediately to those assessed as in need, and signpost to other advisory services.”
