Steyning’s parish council chairman Phil Bowell has taken on his new role amid controversy over plans to build a skate park on the village green.

Sketches were submitted to Horsham District Council by the parish depicting how the new skate park will appear on the Memorial Playing Field site.

Mr Bowell said: “The council came back with small amendments, including two disabled parking spaces and doing away with the proposed bunding.”

But local group, Friends of the Memorial Playing Field (FoMPF), opposed the application and have since recommended a new site.

“A couple of months ago some of the residents asked if they could recommend an alternative site and we agreed,” Mr Bowell said.

“The parish council didn’t feel the new site met the needs of the community. We wished them luck, but we will continue with our own application.”

This week a meeting will be held to see FoMPF’s progress.

“If they have something totally viable that works and all other stake holders agree with it then we will have another look.”
