Library celebrates 40 years in Angmering

VILLAGERS helped celebrate Angmering Library’s 40th anniversary with a special birthday tea.

The library, in Arundel Road, invited residents to join in the celebrations last Tuesday afternoon.

Special guests included Angmering Parish Council chairman Susan Francis and Arun District Council chairman Andy Cooper.

East Preston resident Hilda Norris, one of the first library assistants to work in the new library in 1975, was chosen to cut the birthday cake and library users shared their memories as they tucked into the slices.

The library building sits on Church Hill, opposite St Margaret’s Church in the centre of the village.

It was originally the village school and was build in 1844, then reconstructed in 1853 and a new eastern wing added in 1884.

In 1966 the school moved to a new location in Arundel Road and, after eight years of uncertainty, the building was purchased by West Sussex County Council in 1974 for conversion into a library. The new library opened in November, 1975.

West Sussex County Council staff run the library Monday to Wednesday afternoons and Thursday to Saturday mornings.

Community volunteers then operate the library on Saturday afternoons, following a successful trial by Angmering Parish Council last year, with the aim of working together for the benefit of the community.

Community librarian Rebecca Robertson said: “The event was well attended by members of the local community, community library support volunteers, and current and previous members of staff.

“Guests enjoyed cake, and tea and coffee, and shared their memories of the library and the community.”
