Landfill fight hots up

An action group has been formed to enable a West Sussex village to fight plans for a third landfill site on the edge of its community.

Washington residents turned out in force for a special meeting called by the parish council, which had to be held in the village church to accommodate the large numbers.

They are united in a bid to thwart plans by Violia to create a landfill site at Rock Common when current sand extraction comes to the end of its life.

They were told that landowner Goring Estates stood to benefit by 1 billion from the scheme.
