Today (Thursday July 4) is the first Independents’ Day celebrating Horsham’s unique and varied independent businesses.

Pick up this week’s County Times for some fabulous offers on page 88 to help you support Horsham’s local businesses.

Celebrated nationwide, Independents’ Day is a new scheme for Horsham. Its introduction by Horsham unlimited, the town centre business partnership, has been welcomed by local stores, Horsham District Council, and the County Times alike.

To mark the occasion, independent businesses are offering a host of discounts and special promotions, many of which are valid for the whole month of July.

Keen to celebrate the individuality of Horsham’s shopping streets, independent retailers and restaurateurs have come together to reward customers old and new with enticing deals.

Backing today’s celebrations is Jonathan Chowen (Con, Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead) who said: “Supporting our local businesses is vital because they spend more of their money locally than the nationals.”

He added: “They themselves use more local suppliers, services and many add to local employment.

“Ultimately, this benefits us all.”

Helena Croft (con, Roffey North), Horsham District Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for Horsham Town further emphasised the importance of supporting Horsham’s independent businesses.

Describing the added benefits that independent businesses bring to Horsham, she said: “It is the quality, diversity and entrepreneurialism of our high street independent businesses, which continue to make, not just Horsham town centre, but all of the market towns in our District, such distinctive and valuable shopping destinations for the community.”

Working in partnership with Horsham Unlimited and the County Times, Mrs Croft continued: “The council and I fully support the Horsham Unlimited initiative to bring the UK wide July campaign, in support of Independent retail, to Horsham.”

Coinciding with market day in the Carfax, free musical entertainment is accompanying trader celebrations making the inaugural Independents’ Day an event to remember.

Editor-in-chief of the County Times, Gary Shipman, spoke of his delight to be supporting Horsham’s local businesses.

“The West Sussex County Times has supported and worked in partnership with Horsham’s business community for more than 140 years, and is proud to profile independent businesses and publicise their special promotions this July.”

Look out for stickers and balloons at participating stores today and give independent businesses your support.
