'˜Impressive sum' presented to centre thanks to golfers

Every year, the captain at the golf club nominates a charity for fundraising.

Last year’s captain, David Bamber, chose The Friends of Wrenford as his charity and yesterday, a cheque for £2,000 was presented at the West Sussex County Council centre in Terminus Road, Chichester.

Wrenford Centre manager Deborah Allsop received the cheque from Mr Bamber, watched by Leo May, a community connector with West Sussex County Council, Friends of Wrenford trustee John Symonds, Paul Howard and clients Jackie Hennessy, Tania Symonds, Mark Talmage and Kerry Boxall.

The money was raised by members of the club, which is located in Hunston, through donations, charity events, such as the Captain’s Charity Day, and penalties for hitting balls into hazards or bunkers.

Mr May said: “Our grateful thanks go to David for choosing the Friends as his charity and to all the members of the club for raising such an impressive sum.”

The Friends of Wrenford, which has been in existence for more than 30 years, raises funds to support the customers of The Wrenford Centre, is a day centre for adults with learning disabilities.

The Friends have raised £250,000 over the years to provide equipment, vehicles and services for the benefit of centre clients.

Mr May said: “Specifically, the Friends have provided sensory equipment for the more disabled clients and equipment and decoration for the Starburst Arts Centre at Wrenford, which enables the clients to take part in a variety of arts activities such as art, pottery, drama, photography and dance.”

The Wrenford team has recently been seen out and about in Chichester District Council’s city centre car park, working with partners from The Apuldram Centre.

They have been topping up the metal map dispensers with maps of the city, as part of a project set up by the Chichester Business Improvement District.

The ‘out and about’ team has been going from strength to strength in the city centre, with great interaction with the public.
