Horsham drummer to perform for Olympics

A HORSHAM drummer will perform in front of millions after earning a place at London’s Olympic opening ceremony later this year.

Jack Summerfield, a student at Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), fought off thousands of auditionees to win a spot in the line-up for July’s big event.

The 19-year-old saw an alert for the first auditions on the ACM’s online student portal and decided to seize the opportunity.

He was one of up to 15,000 hopefuls, from musicians to dancers, who demonstrated their talents over a gruelling three-week course in November at London’s enormous 3 Mills Studios.

After being invited back for a second round of auditions, Jack endured a two month wait before finally receiving an email congratulating him on being selected.

Speaking of his fantastic achievement, Jack said: “At one point in the auditions they had us playing on upturned buckets. It was crazy, but a great experience. I was blown away when I found out I’d been accepted.

“Half the world stops to watch the Olympics, which does make it slightly nerve-wracking, but it’s fantastic to be part of something that brings so many people together.

“We’ve all been sworn to secrecy about the exact details of the ceremony, but from what I’ve seen and heard so far it’s going to be spectacular.”

Jack’s rock band, Ghost of the Highway, released its single ‘So Sick’ on February 28, which can be heard on the band’s Facebook page - Facebook - or on iTunes.
