High hopes in sunflower contest

CHILDREN at a Rustington primary school are celebrating the year of the sunflower with high expectations.

Georgian Gardens Community Primary School, in Guildford Road, is holding an inter-class competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower.

The battle commenced in the school’s gardens, with the children planting out seeds supplied by Haskins Roundstone Garden Centre in Angmering.

General manager Nick Joad presented the seeds to Deirdre Carolin, teacher and eco co-ordinator, at the school and met four of the competing pupils.

Two classes from year four will be carefully watering and nurturing their seedlings in a bid to win a £100 gift card for the school and £25 value gift card for the grower of the tallest sunflower, as declared by judges.

Nick Joad said he was looking forward to presenting the prizes in August in wished the children success with their flowers.
