Want to stop smoking? Then why not make No Smoking Day – on Wednesday March 11 - the day you start to stop.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing Christine Field said: “There’s support available for anyone wanting to stop smoking from the West Sussex Stop Smoking Service. No Smoking Day 2015 could be just the push you need to start to stop.

“There are lots of benefits if you quit – not just health related, but also the amount of money you save that could be better spent elsewhere on yourself and your family.”

Smoking is also the single biggest killer in accidental fires in the home. Sadly, in the last three years in West Sussex, 12 people have lost their lives in accidental house fires; seven of those were as a result of smoking.

Nicki Peddle, Safer Communities Manager for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said: “The health risks associated with smoking are well known, but the fact that people are losing their lives in fires caused by cigarettes may come as more of a shock.

“We understand that not every smoker is ready to give up. For those people, the best way to prevent a fire breaking out is to dispose of cigarettes carefully and avoid lighting up in bed.”

No Smoking Day is organised by the British Heart Foundation.

Stopping smoking will save the average smoker more than £150 a month and almost £2,000 a year.

There is a range of services available in West Sussex for anyone wanting to stop smoking. Research shows that getting the support of a Stop Smoking Service makes smokers four times more likely to quit successfully than if they try on their own.
