Have your say on Littlehampton regeneration

Residents have been asked to share their views on ideas to regenerate Littlehampton town centre.

Consultants, alongside Arun District Council, exhibited proposals to de-clutter streets, alter crossings, refurbish the Arcade and install new seating, lighting and trees.

A three-day exhibition, which started on Thursday, was held at Hunnies Café, in High Street, while the consultation closes on Sunday.

Arun leader Gill Brown said: “This consultation is an important phase in the process for the development of Littlehampton Town Centre.

“The consultation period will give you the opportunity to help shape the future of the town centre for years to come.”

Consultants LDA Design exhibited a range of initial plans at the consultation event.

The work would primarily improve the connectivity between the seafront, East Bank and town centre, improving the appearance of key spaces at places like Littlehampton Railway Station.

Terry Ellis, spokesman for Littlehampton Community Charter group, welcomed the consultation and said improvements could attract investment.

He added: “Regeneration of the town centre is long overdue and the plan put forward by LDA Design looks that it may hit the right notes.

“Improving the pedestrian access for visitors, from the station, is much needed, as are access routes from the car parks.

“We expect a little local controversy regarding the possible plans to move or remove the clock tower, as some people are finding it difficult to see the sight line with St Mary’s Church.

“Seating without backrests will also be another area where our residents may have issues.”

Arun was successful in bidding for funding of nearly £50,000 from the Coastal Revival Fund, which is anticipated to go towards detailed design plans.
