People on the Shoreham Team programme raised money through a cake sale and sponsored walk to help fund the project.

Tasks included weeding, laying wood chip and turning over soil in a large area at the West Road centre.

Adur Council chairman Mike Mendoza chatted to the group while they worked and thanked them for their hard work.

He said: “Shoreham Prince’s Trust team has been working hard to rejuvenate the gardens at the recently-opened Fishersgate community centre as part of their community project.”

The group also painted a fence and helped brighten up the garden at Kingston Buci Children and Family Centre, in Middle Road, Shoreham.

The community project is part of the 12-week Prince’s Trust Team programme.

Team leader Vicki Lee-Gleadall said the group had done a sponsored walk from Shoreham High Street to Brighton Pier last Monday and raised around £200.

“They are using the monies raised and a lot of elbow grease to rejuvenate the gardens at Fishersgate community centre and Kingston Buci Children and Family Centre,” she explained.

After the ‘very grey’ sponsored walk, the sun had shone for the two days they were working in Fishersgate.

Work at the Kingston Buci centre started on Monday, when the Prince’s Trust team made planters out of reclaimed tyres donated by the motor mechanics department at City College in Brighton.

Vicki said the impact had been ‘great’ and made the garden nicer for the children.

The next Prince’s Trust Team programme starts in January and young people are being recruited now. It provides individual development in a team environment and aims to get unemployed young people aged 16 to 25 into education, training and employment while building skills and gaining a recognised qualification.

The course is free and travel is paid. Contact Vicki on 07788 340508 or email [email protected] for further details.
