Funding campaign for first disabled toilet

Goring mum Laura Moore has been leading the campaign for improved disabled facilities for the past year and hopes the new facility will be installed in the toilet block opposite the Dome, in Marine Parade.

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise the final £3,000 to build the facility.

Laura, 37, of Ashurst Close, said: “Standard disabled toilets are not fully accessible and are not catered to the severely disabled.

“They are only suitable for people who can transfer to and from their wheelchair, who can clean themselves and don’t need the help of several carers.

“The council agreed to put the Changing Places toilet in as part of the refurbishment of the toilet block. Worthing Scope have been on board from day one and we just need to find the last £3,000 to help fund it.”

Laura, whose five-year-old son, William, suffers from severe dystonic motor disorder, finds trips to town difficult because of a lack of facilities.

The nearest fully accessible disabled toilet is at Splashpoint.

Laura added: “It’s a hugely important facility. At the moment, I can only come into town for about an hour and then have to go home or to Splashpoint to change William.”
