Fly tipping ‘blight’ at conservation site

A reader sent in these photos from Sullington Warren, showing what she described as ‘a blight on this beauty spot’.

“Unfortunately it is difficult to discern the source,” she said, “as there are no obvious clues other than the fact that what appears to be broken sanitary ware is of a distinctive sky blue and what seems to be a kitchen worktop surface drainage area is slate grey.

“There also appears to be a double divan bed.”

Charlie Cain, of the National Trust, said this was the fourth recent incident of fly tipping at that spot, though the previous three had been tree cuttings.

“If anyone recognises this as being their waste, the National Trust would love to hear from you,” he said.

“If we could catch these rogue tippers, that would do everyone a favour.”

Charlie said he plans to take a look through the rubbish in the hope of finding a clue as to where it came from.

In most cases where they manage to trace fly-tipped waste, he said, a householder has paid a company to take it away, and the company has ditched it rather than deal with it legally, as trade waste.

If a clue does not turn up at the site, he said, their only chance is if that householder sees the photos online and gets in touch to identify the culprits.
