Fire fatality: smoke alarms didn’t have batteries

SMOKE alarms in the Worthing maisonette where a man died this morning (Monday March 19) didn’t have batteries in them.

Firefighters have revealed that the home had two smoke alarms fitted but neither had batteries.

A spokesperson said: “Had they been in working order the fire might have been detected a lot earlier and it could have saved a life. West Sussex Fire & Rescue service urge residents to ensure they have a working smoke alarm in their property and to make sure it is regularly tested. Testing your smoke alarm only takes a few minutes and can easily be incorporated into your weekly routine. Test your smoke alarm not your luck!”

The fire was in Gratwicke Road where the dead man was discovered.

Fire investigation officers remained at the scene working alongside the Police to determine the cause of the fire. Due to the extent of the damage the precise cause of the incident is still being established but early indications are that it could have been due to discarded smoking materials.
