Despite a very late Spring this year, with virtually no tulips out and daffodils only just beginning for many of us, we had a lovely show in the Ewhurst Village Hall last Saturday, 28th March.

All visitors to the show were treated to a fine array of colour and intoxicating scent, with some particularly lovely floral art displays.

The home fare classes were well represented and a new class for Simnel cakes proved very popular, particularly as the winning cake attracted additional prize money and was then auctioned, along with many of the flowers at the end of the show.

The photography classes were of a very high standard, and the children’s classes were fun, colourful and, in the case of the fridge cake class for the older children, very delicious looking.

Our club president, Richard Tabor, was particularly successful at this year’s show, winning as he did the John Bennett Bowl for the best exhibit in the horticultural section, the Margaret Hawes Cup for the most points in the open daffodil classes, the Surrey Horticultural Federation Merrist Wood Cup for the best daffodil in the show, and the Daffodil Society Bronze Medal for his magnificent exhibit of six varieties of daffodil.

Wendy Wesley scooped the Richard Tabor Cup for the most points in the members only daffodil classes, and she was also awarded a Daffodil Society Diploma for her splendid “Lighthouse Reef” trumpet daffodil.

Anne Dyball not only won the Rural Pies Cup for the most points in the home fare section, she also won the President’s Prize of £15 for her Simnel cake. In the floral art classes, the Cranleigh Cup for the most points in the floral art section was awarded to Georgina Whorlow, who produced several gorgeous displays.

In the children’s classes, the pre-school Easter collage was won by Rose Smith, with her brother Alex a close second. In the 8 years and under (decorated hard-boiled egg) class, Rylan Shickell won first prize with Daniel Elms second. In the 16 years and under Fridge Cake class, we had two first prize winners: Lucy Payne and Isabella Matthews.

We are very grateful to all our entrants, to our judges and to our visitors during the afternoon. We look forward to welcoming you all to our Plant Sale on 9th May and our Summer Show on 11th July.
