Three weeks ago the lambs were weaned. Since then they have occupied a field at the other end of the farm to the ewes.The occasional bleat may have drifted across to their bereft mothers on the wind.

Not that they cared much. Far too important matters such as getting ready to court the tups in a month or two are on their minds. That and getting their heads down for a good feed without a ceaseless battering in the most delicate part of their bodies from an unfeeling hulk of an adolescent lamb.

The field they are in has had a crop of hay taken off in the summer. Since then the grass has grown unchecked, uncut, ungrazed. The resultant growth is referred to as fog.

Before turning the lambs into the field John wormed them. However the warm, wet weather has kept the growth of grass ahead of the lambs foraging and resulted in a number of them scouring '“ i.e. loose motions that stain and cling to their rear ends and present a rich feast for a passing fly.
