It is indicative though of the growing cynicism in the face of yet another health scare. The mass deaths that were to result from BSE? A salmonella struck egg industry? Scrapied sheep? There is not a week goes by without some doom and gloom merchant on the radio or in the paper, pontificating about their research findings; most of it anti-farming, anti-meat or even anti-milk and eggs. With the nation being urged to go for flu jabs as a preventative measure, it could be richly ironic if a panicky government called for a mass cull of poultry. We have friends who keep thousands of hens laying eggs for the sole purpose of providing the medium to cultivate and grow the flu vaccine. That would precipitate alarm if no flu vaccine were available because there were no hens left to lay the golden eggs.
