Ofsted inspection gives Bury school positive feedback

A particularly pleasing part of the process for the school was the response to the Ofsted parent survey which found that 100 per cent of parents said they would ‘recommend the school to a friend’.

Headteacher Thomas Moore said: “The inspector spent two days with us, really getting to know the school and seeing all the fantastic learning opportunities going on, talking with parents, children and staff and spending lots of time in class and out in the woods.”

The school had some positive feedback, including ‘staff seize every opportunity to engage children in learning’ and ‘the school is a harmonious, happy community where respect and kindness prevail and where pupils become thoughtful, tolerant individuals’.

Mr Moore added: “It is little wonder our curriculum was so positively recognised; the school had just finished hosting Somerleyton Primary School from Suffolk for their first ever residential.

“Along with Somerleyton, Bury CE Primary was selected to be the first pair of schools as a National Park exchange visit.

“Our oldest children spent three days up in the Broads learning first-hand about the geography of the area before welcoming the children from Somerleyton back to us two weeks later and teaching them all about the geography and habitats of the South Downs.

“Just last week we had a visit from inspirational poet Rachel Long, who spent the morning with Buzzard Class (years five and six), leading a poetry workshop.”

This opportunity was provided by The Arts Society West Sussex Young Arts to eight local schools and Bury CE Primary School were delighted to welcome children from Fittleworth.

“The children were all trying their best with the aim of becoming the Bury Poet Laureate and performing their poetry to a packed audience at the Petworth Literary Festival,” added Mr Moore.

“Such is the quality of the writing being produced here at Bury that our years five and six teacher, Mrs Braun, was asked to present what she has been doing to other teachers across West Sussex at a recent English conference.’’
