Drink-driving young shock

YOUNG drivers have started a worrying new trend in drink-drive statistics for Sussex, with six out of ten drivers who were arrested in the run-up to Christmas falling into the 17-to-25-year age group.

Police released figures from up to December 19, showing that 257 drivers had been breath-tested following collisions.

However, despite the encouraging statistic of only ten arrested, the high percentage of young people involved has been of particular concern.

This figure is all the more worrying because this age group was involved in 25 per cent of recorded collisions.

Chief Inspector Mark Trimmer, of the Roads Policing Unit, reinforced the message of the drink-drive campaign.

"It is very sad that the 17-25- year-old age group are featuring highly in alcohol-related collisions and we will robustly target this group of drivers to further reduce the number of casualties on our roads over Christmas and into the new year," he said.
