Donkey Derby profit tops last year by £1,000

The club has confirmed more than £5,660 was raised – a whole £1,000 more than last year.

Every penny will go back out in charitable donations or service activities in the area.

Club president Rose Carter said: “We are not like many other charities as every penny of profit goes back out to charitable causes and service activities.

“We owe many thanks to all those who helped us, from the Scouts to our Friends of Lions group.”

The Lions roared and the donkeys thundered, with a record 269 children enjoying a ride last Saturday.

Lion Susan Saunders said: “What a fantastic day out for all the family. It was like Goldilocks and the Three Bears – the weather wasn’t too hot or too cold, in fact everything was just right.

“There were more classic vehicles than in recent years and even Chris Ewbank’s ex truck appeared. There was a beautiful Romany caravan lovingly restored by a local man, which drew admiring crowds.

“Families sat having picnics while children had a go at Sammy’s circus skills.”

The weather made all the difference in terms of the profit and in the coming months, the members of the club will be deciding where the money will go.
