But the Lyminster Primary School pupil was determined and a year after she came up with the idea, the cut took place in front of pupils, their families and friends.

Parents Marcus and Alison Lee said Maisy had looked after her hair well and on Friday, she had her plaits cut off by her year-five teacher, Miss Mary Donnally, at the school Christmas fair.

“About a year ago, she came up with the idea that she would like to have her hair cut, so that it could be sent off to be made into wigs for boys and girls who had lost their hair due to the treatment they had received.

“We were not sure and after a while, she didn’t mention it, so we thought it was just a phase.

“But in August, she brought it up again and we had a long discussion with her, and she was determined to go ahead.”

Maisy, who is now in year six, also attends Footsteps, the Sunday school at St Mary’s Church in Storrington.

So far, she has raised more than £850 for Cancer Research and her hair has been donated to Little Princess Trust, which makes real-hair wigs and hair pieces.

Maisy said: “I am donating my hair to children who have lost their hair due to cancer. I want children to live their life like mine and I think my hair would help them.”
