Delight as footbridge wins lotto backing

A MUCH-needed new footbridge is on the cards for Shoreham after Sustrans won the Big Lottery Fund's People's £50m contest last week.Shoreham stands to get around £750,000 for the bridge as one of the 79 schemes that the national recycling charity will help finance with its Connect2 initiative.

Councillor Liza McKinney, from Shoreham Beach Residents' Association, said: "Our desire is to have a bridge that will take cyclists and pedestrians and be a bit wider, and of course we have the opportunity to have a rather nice-looking bridge.

"The more we get people using transport that isn't adding to the climate problems the better, and that bridge is actually absolutely ideal."

She added that they would certainly be lobbying the county council to contribute the rest of the money to the project, which could cost up to 3m.
