Thieves leave trail of damage after South Downs copper theft

Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused at a South Downs village when thieves stole a 50-metre length of copper cable.

Police say that the recently-installed cable, alone worth around £2,000, was taken from a ‘cafe caravan’ at a vineyard in East Street, West Chiltington, on Sunday morning (August 9).

A spokesman said: “Damage had been caused to the caravan in the course of doing this, estimated at several thousand pounds to repair.

“Anyone with information can contact Sussex Police by calling 101, quoting serial 845 of 09/08.”
