A 15-year-old boy has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious head injuries following an assault in Burgess Hill late yesterday (Wednesday August 8) evening and remains in a critical condition.

At around 10.50pm Sussex Police received several reports from members of the public of an assault in Queens Crescent and that two men had been seen running towards Station Road, one heading up an alleyway and the other to the road junction.

Detective Sergeant Jonathan Pink of West Sussex CID said: “The investigation is in it’s early stages and we are trying to establish the exact circumstances that led up to the young boy being attacked.

“The victim was seen to get up and leave a BMX bicycle in the road and walk off towards Station Road and the Railway Station. When we attended the area we found the teenager with head injuries but whilst speaking to him to find out what had happened he collapsed to the ground and was immediately taken by ambulance to hospital.

“Forensic examinations and police enquires will be continuing today around Queens Crescent and near Burgess Hill Railway Station and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed any disturbance in the area or saw the boy on his BMX bike prior to the assault to please get in touch immediately. You can call 101 quoting Operation Bee or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111”.

Two men aged 20 and 28 were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm a short time later and remain in custody for questioning.
