They struck at Day Lewis Pharmacy and the charity shop in Orion Parade and at Bowley Funeral Service off Keymer Road.

They forced open a till at the pharmacy after breaking-in through the back and smashing a stock-room window, but there was no money on the premises and nothing was taken.

Last year, three caring volunteers, pictured, were awarded long service awards for helping to run the Age UK charity shop in Orion Parade.

Last night, thieves broke-in through the back in their desperate search for money.

Olive Pearson, the assistant manager at the shop said: “We bank our money but they found a small quantity by breaking into all the cupboards and drawers.

“There was hardly anything to take but every penny means a lot to us. They must have been desperate. There were coins all over the floor - it’s so sad to think they could do this to a charity shop.”
