Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman reported that a man tried to rape her in a pub in Crawley in the early hours of today (Sunday 8 September).

A police statement says that the 46-year-old victim was in the Dr Samuel Johnson pub in Langley Parade, Crawley, when she was approached by a man while she was in the toilets.

He then attempted to rape her just before 1am.

She managed to get away and raise the alarm.

A 28-year-old man from Crawley was arrested shortly afterwards for attempted rape and is currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Andy Wolstenholme said: “This was a extremely distressing ordeal for the victim. We are appealing for anyone who was in the pub from 11.45pm last night to 1.30am this morning to come forward. There was a group of men who arrived at the premises at about 11.50pm and we are keen to speak to any of them.”
