Man punched in the face and off duty police officer bitten in Cranleigh attack

A man was punched in the face and an off duty police officer was scratched and bitten in an attack in Cranleigh.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the assault, which happened on Friday, April 16.

A spokesman said: “The initial assault took place outside Cranleigh Cricket Club at around 6pm, when the suspect approached the male victim, who was unknown to her, and punched him in the face. An off duty police officer witnessed the assault and intervened to offer assistance to the victim.

“The officer left the cricket club to check on the welfare of the suspect, who had walked to the grounds behind the Richard Oslow pub, where she proceeded to assault the officer by scratching and biting her, as well as spitting at her.

“The officer was treated in hospital for her injuries.

A 51-year-old woman from Cranleigh was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault by causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage, assault by beating of an emergency worker and racially aggravated public order, said police. She has been released under investigation.

The spokesman said: “If you witnessed either of the assaults, or have any information which could help including CCTV footage, please contact us quoting PR/45210039111.”
