Man charged with attempted murder in Burgess Hill

A man has been charged with attempted murder after another man was driven at in Burgess Hill, said police.

Officers received a report of a verbal altercation involving two men at the junction of Cants Lane and Wyvern Way, Burgess Hill, at around 12.15pm on Monday (August 24), said police.

A spokesman added: “One of the men was then seen to get into his vehicle and drive his car at the other man, colliding with him before colliding into a road sign.

“The suspect exited the car and assaulted the victim before getting in his car and driving off.”

The vehicle was located in Cants Lane and the suspect was located and arrested by officers nearby, said police.

The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered minor injuries and has been discharged from hospital.

A spokesman added: “Arthur McGhie, 54, of Cants Lane, Burgess Hill has been charged with attempted murder, actual bodily harm, assaulting an emergency worker and dangerous driving. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (August 26).”

The victim worked for Mid Sussex District Council, councillor Stephen Hillier confirmed.

“We are aware that one of our officers was seriously assaulted on Cants Lane in Burgess Hill earlier today,” he said on Monday.

“Police are investigating the incident and we are actively supporting them.”

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Colin Garman added: “We are aware of the video circulating on social media and we would ask you not to share this on your own pages or profiles as this may jeopardise any future court proceedings.

“It could also cause further distress to the victim and his family.

“Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to report this information online or call 101 quoting Operation Burwell.”
