The elderly woman returned to her home in North Parade to find it ransacked after entry was gained through a side window.
A camera, jewellery, and laptop were stolen during the break-in, which happened between 12.30pm and just after 2pm.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “This was a very upsetting incident for the victim, who returned home to find her home had been burgled.
“This happened in the middle of the day and we are hoping someone may have seen something or someone acting suspiciously in the area at the relevant times.
“If anyone has any information then we would urge them to call police on 101, quoting serial 0758 of 12 June. Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
