Burglary attack lands mother and daughter in hospital

Two men wearing Balaclavas broke into the home in Cricketers Close and struck a 41-year-old mother and her 16-year-old daughter on the head.

The mother and daughter were taken to hospital and required stitches for their head wounds.

They have now returned home, but a police spokeswoman said they were still shocked by their ordeal.

A male victim was also hit in the stomach, but was not admitted to hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Two men broke into a house in Ashington on Thursday night (August 29) and assaulted the three occupants.

“The victims were woken at 9.10pm at their home in Cricketers Close by two men who broke through the front door and shouted ‘police’.

“The suspects ran upstairs and were confronted by the mother and daughter who live at the property.

“Both were hit on the head with a weapon and the male victim was also hit in the stomach. He called the police and the suspects left in a dark coloured car.”

Detective Constable Katy Lewis said: “These men are both described as around 5ft 8inches tall, white and of a stocky build wearing dark clothing and Balaclavas.

“We are hoping someone might have seen the car the suspects used in the area and can give us some information. Both women have received deep wounds to their heads and were treated in hospital.

“We are urging anyone with information to contact police on 101 quoting serial 1601 of 29/8 or email [email protected]”
