Course to educate on suicide

A TRAINING programme to help identify vulnerable people with mental health issues, particularly those who may be having suicidal thoughts, is taking place on Monday.

Worthing Mental Health Awareness, in partnership with Grass Roots, will provide training to 30 members of the local community.

The training aims to equip participants to better engage in conversation to enable those in emotional distress to be signposted on to appropriate services.

The course is due to be attended by participants from a variety of organisations including Sussex Police, Sussex Partnership, Worthing College, Carer’s Support, Adur and Worthing Councils, as well as members of the public. Mayor of Worthing Bob Smytherman will also be attending with mayoress Norah Fisher.

Carol Barber, organiser of Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week, said: “I am delighted that 30 people, from all walks of life have stepped forward to say that they care about others who are in distress.

“It is wonderful to see the Police committed to this initiative. This is a clear demonstration of how the Police are always striving to develop in order better serve their communities.”
