Christmas lights down and trees toppled – strong winds batter Sussex

FIREFIGHTERS had a busy period today (November 21) after calls to several weather-related incidents across the county.

A tree toppled around midday in Worthing in Chesswood Road, landing on a parked car.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the tree was on private land and no one was in the car at the time.

Around 10.30am a crew from Chichester had to fix the city’s Christmas lights after one of the structures came loose above the branch of Oasis on East Street.

The light did not fall down as it was strung across the street with four supporting cables, however the crew had to patch up the damaged cable after it detached from the wall

Commuters have experienced delays after a tree on the line between Horsham and Crawley earlier today.

All lines have been reopened but Southern Rail warned people to still expect delays and replacement buses have been arranged.

Also in Horsham at 12.11pm, firefighters were called to Station Close after a gazebo in a garden nearly took flight. The crew managed to get it back to where it took off from and reattach it.

In Sterling Parade, Rustington, the wind was so strong it took down a fascia above one of the shops around midday.

Thirty minutes later, an aerial was blown down from a house in Church Street, Littlehampton.

Meanwhile in St Leonards, Hastings, fire crews were dispatched to a call over a dangerous tree overhanging a public walkway in Battle Road.

They arrived at the scene at 1.19pm and removed the problem branches, leaving the scene at 2.16pm.
