The honour is the latest to be bestowed upon Mrs Legrave in 2015.

Earlier this year she was awarded an OBE for services to Further Education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Mrs Legrave said: “It is an absolute honour to be appointed as a deputy lieutenant for West Sussex.

“I am very much looking forward to assisting the lord-lieutenant in her duties.”

Last year Chichester College was rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED, placing it in the top seven further education institutes in the country.

Before becoming principal at Chichester College, Shelagh was the college’s chief operating officer, a position she held for seven years having previously been employed by Roehampton University before working in London, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.

She also served in the Women’s Royal Army Corps.

Deputy lieutenants are appointed by the lord-lieutenant at her discretion, subject only to Her Majesty The Queen disapproving of the granting of the commission.

Although military in origin, the post no longer has any military significance but every deputy lieutenant agrees to assist the lord-lieutenant in the performance of any duties that may be laid upon them.

This can include representing the lord-lieutenant at formal functions, award ceremonies, citizenship ceremonies or attending Remembrance Day services.
