The ball, organised by the grandmother and mother of Mariah Dunk, who died aged one, raised £6,500 for Meningitis UK.

Mariah’s grandmother, Helen Hancorn, 47, of Upper Brighton Road, Sompting said: “It went really well. It was hard work getting it all together but we are really pleased.

“Lots of people were so generous which really helped. Ian Hart is a family friend and did Mariah’s funeral, he did the auction for us and was brilliant.”

There were 180 people in attendance at the Charmandean Centre, in Forest Road, Worthing, including executive founder of Meningitis UK Steve Dayman.

Steve lost his 14-month-old son Spencer to meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982.

Mariah’s mum Jodie Dunk, 23, also of Upper Brighton Road, Sompting, said: “Having the support from Steve and meningitis really helped us through this sad and emotional time “

Jodie and Helen are ambassadors for Meningitis UK.

Mariah’s father Si is running a marathon in Las Vegas tomorrow, raising money for the charity.
