Call to find use for Crawley free school building

A county councillor has pressed for an update on the future use of a free school which closed last year.

Discovery New School, which was housed in Broadfield House, was ordered to close by the Government in April 2014 after being judged ‘inadequate’ following its first Ofsted inspection.

Cllr Brian Quinn (Lab, Broadfield) asked Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for education and skills if there were any plans to find a alternative use for the school’s Grade II listed building.

Cllr Quinn wondered if there was a get-out clause on the lease and if they could influence the school on its future use.

At a Full Council meeting, held in Crawley on Friday (March 27), Cllr Hunt said he would get an update for Cllr Quinn but he understood the matter was currently with the Department for Education.
