Café move evokes strong feelings at hospital meeting

A HOSPITAL governor expressed her concern for the future of a ‘priceless’ café in Worthing Hospital at an NHS Western Sussex Hospitals Trust board meeting.

Barbara Porter, public governor for Adur, sought assurance from the board that great consideration would be taken when deciding on the relocation of the League of Friends café in last Thursday’s meeting.

She said: “I feel very strongly about this. I’m speaking about it not just as a governor but as a patient and a member of the public.

“I ask whether the value of the League of Friends café is really realised, because it serves more than just a catering and retail outlet, it’s an area for relatives and patients and staff and everyone within the hospital community.

“You cannot put a monetary value on that. It is only a small place but it is absolutely vital.”

Chief executive of the board, Marianne Griffiths responded: “It is obviously our concern too and I know that there is some unease around shifting its current position.

“We will be placing it probably at the front of the hospital and again I reinforce that the recognition and value of it is seen and known.”
