Cabin crew worker finds motivation in Worthing cafés for debut novel

A ‘frustrated’ cabin crew worker has recently self-published his debut novel on Kindle as he hopes to pursue a career as a novelist.

Grant Langley, who writes under the pseudonym, Heath Shedlake, found his inspiration from a love of historical novels. His story, Jabuti’s Quest, is set in the Venezuelan rainforest in the 17th century and follows a young man as he searches for his father who he has never met.

Mr Langley said: “I came up with the idea for my book after waking up one morning with the first line in my head. I started writing as a result of my frustration with my job as cabin crew because of all the free time we get ‘down-route’ with nothing much to do.”

Much of the two-year writing process was spent in Worthing’s café’s where he felt more motivated, particularly The Blue Bird in Ferring.

He decided to self-publish to ‘get his novel out there’ rather than wait the years it can take to go through a traditional publishing house.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed it as I have found I finally have a brain after 16 years of ‘chicken, beef, tea or coffee?’”
