BREAKING COUNTY NEWS: Two hurt after Sussex homes struck by lightning

Two people are recovering in hospital today (Sunday) after Sussex homes were hit by lightning in the early hours.

Seven houses in one Eastbourne street were evacuated in after a lightning strike.

Firefighters were initially called to reports of fires in Schofield Way, Langney, at 2.45am as heavy rain and thunder and lightning struck across the town.

Seven homes in the road were said to have been hit and there were signs of lightning burns inside some of the properties.

A spokesperson at East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said fire crews were called to reports of fires and a ceiling collapse.

Four appliances from Eastbourne, Hailsham and Bexhill and one officer were mobilised to the scene on

On arrival it was confirmed that seven properties had been affected by the lightning strike, with two suffering serious damage to the chimney and roof area.

Crews used a flex pack and one hose reel at the incident.

Firefighters weather proofed the properties and made the area safe before leaving the scene just after 5am and the electricity company was also called.

Two people are believed to have been taken to hospital.
