A councillor has said he is delighted bollards have been installed along a busy road to prevent ‘inconsiderate’ parking and improve road safety.

Francis Oppler, a member of West Sussex County Council, said he had been pushing for the last three to four years to have some kind of preventative measure against pavement parking introduced on Longford Road.

He said traffic and pedestrians on the road, which is near the railway station, had been badly affected by vehicles parked partway onto the pavement outside shops.

He said: “It’s a very busy road, for children and young people crossing to go to the railway station, it’s been a very dangerous situation for a very long time.

“Now the bollards are there, it’s going to stop the inconsiderate parking, so I think it’s going to be an improvement for everybody.”

The stretch of pavement, which is directly around the corner from a busy junction, had been partly obstructed by people parking, which had often led to traffic jams in the area.

“It has blocked pavements and cased problems for pedestrians and people using wheelchairs,” Mr Oppler said.

“For traffic going north, if there are buses waiting at the cross roads going south, it’s caused a traffic jam as traffic just can’t get past.”
